Borna Disease

Near Eastern Encephalitis

Borna disease (BD) is a rare neurological disease caused by a virus belonging to the genus Bornavirus in the family, Bornaviridae. Natural infection with Borna disease virus (BDV) mainly affects goats and sheep and may be associated with neurological disease in cats. The disease is endemic in goats and sheep in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Transmission
The virus is assumed to be transmitted through saliva, nasal, eye discharge.

Incubation Period
The incubation period of Borna disease is estimated to be from 1 to 6 months.

Symptoms

Depression
Altered behavior
Chewing motions without food intake
Frequent yawning
Muscular tremors
Head pressing
Head tilt
Ataxia
Fever
Cranial nerve signs
Bloat
